Richard F. Gadbois Obituary, Man Dies After Driving Truck Through Ice On Lake Mille Lacs

The recent incident on Mille Lacs Lake serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers associated with thin ice during winter months. As the community grieves the loss of an elderly resident, it is essential for everyone to prioritize safety, stay informed about ice conditions, and exercise caution when engaging in winter activities on frozen lakes and ponds. By following safety guidelines, we can collectively work towards preventing such heartbreaking incidents in the future.

In a heartbreaking incident on Friday morning, an 80-year-old man lost his life after his truck crashed through the ice on the southeastern end of Mille Lacs Lake in Minnesota. The tragedy unfolded near MSA Flagship Inn in the town of Isle, prompting a swift response from the Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s Office. According to authorities, the incident was reported by a 911 caller who witnessed the crash and noticed a person in the water near MSA Flagship Inn. The quick-thinking caller managed to bring the victim, identified as local resident Richard F. Gadbois, to shore before emergency services arrived.

Despite wearing a flotation device, Gadbois succumbed to the frigid waters. He was subsequently pronounced dead at an area hospital, marking a somber day for the local community. The Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s Office issued a public advisory following the tragic incident, emphasizing the hazardous conditions of the ice. The statement serves as a poignant reminder that ice conditions on many lakes, including Mille Lacs Lake, are not suitable for driving cars and trucks at present.

The news release issued by the sheriff’s office highlighted the compromised quality of the ice due to recent rains and warm temperatures. The incident occurred when the ice thickness was approximately six inches, falling well below the recommended thickness for vehicles like trucks, which is in the range of 13 to 17 inches. This unfortunate event underscores the importance of adhering to safety guidelines when venturing onto frozen bodies of water.

Authorities urge the public to exercise caution and stay informed about current ice conditions, especially during periods of fluctuating temperatures. As winter weather brings varying conditions, it is crucial for individuals to check the thickness of the ice before attempting to drive vehicles on frozen lakes or ponds. Understanding and respecting the recommended thickness guidelines can significantly reduce the risk of such tragic accidents.

The passing of Richard F. Gadbois has left the community in mourning, emphasizing the need for increased awareness and safety measures during winter activities. Local authorities and support services are extending their condolences to the family and friends affected by this tragedy.
