Randy James Mullen, age 76, passed away on Saturday, August 5, 2023 at the Villas at Winston Ct. in Marshall. He was a resident of Battle Creek and had previously had a residence in Marshall. When Randy Hughes was born on January 8, 1947, he was born in Albion, Michigan to his parents, Raymond Mullen and Jewell (Waterhouse) Hughes.
He and his brothers, Richard and Patrick, were considered “Army Brats” since they travelled with their parents to a number of different countries, including Japan, Germany, and numerous states.
It was during his father’s tour of service at neighbouring Fort Leonard Wood that he received his high school diploma from Waynesville High School in Waynesville, Missouri, in the year 1965. Randy enlisted in the Marine Corps in May 1966 and served his country until March 1969.
During his time in the military, he served with the 3rd Marine Air Wing in El Toro, California; the 5th Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendelton, California; the III Marine Amphibious Force in Danang, Vietnam; and the 3rd Marine Division in Dong Ha, Vietnam.
Prior to graduating from Western Michigan University with a bachelor’s degree in Geography in 1973, he earned his education at Kellogg Community College, which is located in Battle Creek. During the year 1974, he was introduced to his beloved Deborah VerMeulen, and in December of that same year, he wed her. Deborah served as evidence to him that angels did, in fact, exist on earth. Throughout his life, Randy held a variety of interesting occupations.
The Central Intelligence Agency, the Environmental Research Institute of Michigan, ESL, Inc. in Sunnyvale, California, and the Santa Clara Valley Water District in San Jose, California were among the organisations that employed him.
