The Life and Legacy of Sister Maureen Tzinieris, OLM On January 6, 2024, Sister Maureen Tzinieris, a member of the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy, passed away. Sister Maureen’s parents, Felix and Eva Tzinieris, welcomed their daughter, Joyce Angeline, into the world on April 1, 1932, in Greenville, South Carolina.
She attended and graduated from St. Angela Academy in Aiken, South Carolina; then she earned a BA from Villanova University in Pennsylvania and an MA in elementary education from Seton Hall University in New Jersey.
St. Louis University in Missouri and Our Lady of Mercy Junior College in Charleston, South Carolina were both attended by Sister Maureen. January 2, 1951 was the date Sister Maureen’s admission to the convent. She first made her vows public on September 12, 1953, and then on September 12, 1956, she made her perpetual profession. Sister Maureen’s career in education began in 1951. She served as a teacher and principal at many schools, including St.
Andrew’s in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, St. Michael’s in Gibbstown, New Jersey, and St. Joseph and Sacred Heart Schools in Charleston, South Carolina.
While in South Carolina, she worked at Divine Saviour Hospital and Nursing Home in York and St. Francis Xavier Hospital in Charleston. From 1976 until 1988, Sister Maureen was the General Treasurer of the order. She also served as the superior and treasurer of other convents.
Sister Maureen was an active member of the Nativity Church choir on James Island, South Carolina, and a long-time volunteer at Our Lady of Mercy Outreach on Johns Island, South Carolina.
After entering retirement, Sister continued to serve as cantor for communal prayers and Eucharist and was very involved in the prayer ministry of the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy Motherhouse community.
