As a result of the recent string of tragic events that occurred on Interstate 55 close to Braceville, a town has been left in a state of grief. Three separate accidents in which a woman was killed and five others incurred injuries also occurred.
A full account of the sequence of events that took place on that fatal evening was provided by the Braceville Fire Protection District, which was the first responders to the scene.
At approximately 7:30 p.m. on Friday, a collision involving two semis occurred in the northbound lanes at mile marker 231. This was the first accident in a series of accidents that occurred. Both of the semis caught fire as a result of the force of the impact, which resulted in a terrifying spectacle on the interstate.
By some miracle, there were no reports of injuries in this initial collision; nonetheless, the subsequent turmoil on the road laid the groundwork for other catastrophes to occur.
Two automobiles were involved in a secondary incident that took place in the northbound lanes near mile marker 230. This collision took place inside the aftermath of the initial collision.
It is quite possible that the congestion that was caused by the initial event was a contributing factor in this terrible outcome. Regrettably, this occurrence resulted in the injury of one individual, which serves to further emphasise the risks and the repercussions that can result from mishaps of this nature.
A third collision took place later in the evening, at approximately nine o’clock, and it was a tragedy once more. This time, a semi-truck was involved in a collision with two vehicles that were slowing down in the southbound lanes at mile marker 231. The impact of this incident resulted in injuries to other people involved, as well as the death of a woman who was involved in the crash.
