Our hearts are heavy with the news of the passing of our beloved dad, Victor Rafael Davila, who peacefully left us on the morning of Friday, December 29th, after a courageous battle with congestive heart failure. At the age of 87, he leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unforgettable memories. Born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, Dad was a part of the significant wave of Puerto Rican migration to Brooklyn, NY, during the early 1950s. It was in the vibrant streets of Brooklyn that he encountered our mom, Edith, and after his honorable service in the US Army during the Korean War, they tied the knot and embarked on a journey that would lead them to Los Angeles.
Several years later, our family made a home in Anaheim, and about two decades after that, the city of Orange became our final destination. Dad’s commitment to family and providing a stable home was evident in every move we made. One of Dad’s greatest passions was the sport of softball, which he played with enthusiasm for over thirty years. Whether on the field or cheering from the stands, he brought his A-game and a contagious energy that won him friends and admirers. His dedication to the sport was a testament to his love for camaraderie and competition.
Beyond the softball diamond, Dad was an avid sports enthusiast, fervently supporting both the Yankees and the Dodgers. His unmistakable team jerseys, hats, and jackets were a trademark at almost every social event, proudly displaying his allegiance. His unwavering loyalty to his favorite teams added a lively spark to family gatherings and celebrations. In his role as a grandparent, Dad was a beacon of pride and generosity. He cherished his time with his grandchildren, Emily, Devon, William, and Sasha, showering them with love and creating cherished memories. The joy he derived from their company was palpable, and his legacy lives on through the values and love he instilled in each of them.
Dad’s zest for life extended beyond sports and family; he found joy in swimming, salsa music, and dancing. His love for the simple pleasures of life was also evident in his enjoyment of sipping on rum and Coke, a ritual he indulged in until the very end. The timing of Dad’s passing, less than three weeks after the loss of his sister Lourdes in Tennessee, adds a poignant layer to our grief. The interconnectedness of their departures reminds us of the intricate tapestry of family bonds and the inevitability of the circle of life.
As we navigate the difficult days ahead, funeral arrangements and a celebration of Dad’s remarkable life are pending. Until then, we invite friends, family, and all who knew him to raise a rum and Coke in his honor.
