Ethel Zwemer Obituary, A Life Well Lived

In loving memory of Ethel Zwemer, age 105, of Holland, who peacefully passed away on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, at Resthaven Care Center. Ethel’s journey through life spanned over a century, leaving an indelible legacy of love, faith, and service. Born in 1918 to Gerrit and Mary Oonk, Ethel’s early years were spent on the family farm in Overisel.

She attended Hope High School and later graduated from Holland High School, where destiny would bring her together with her future husband, Lawrence Zwemer. Their union was not only one of love but a partnership grounded in shared values and a commitment to family. Ethel dedicated her life to caring for her family, embodying the roles of wife, mother, and grandmother with grace and devotion. Her roots in faith ran deep, and she was an active member of the First Reformed Church in Holland.

For many years, Ethel taught Sunday school, held leadership positions in women’s organizations, and served as an elder—a testament to her unwavering commitment to her spiritual community. Before her marriage, Ethel pursued a career as a hairstylist, showcasing her creativity and skill. Later in life, she contributed her talents to DeWaard Interiors. Ethel’s multifaceted life journey reflected her resilience, adaptability, and a genuine passion for both family and work.

Ethel is survived by her daughters Ruth (Ken) Rabbers, Marilyn Tate, Nancy Nyland, and Laurie (Mark) Baron, as well as nine grandchildren, and numerous great and great-great-grandchildren. Throughout her long life, her family and faith remained the cornerstones of her existence. A private family graveside service will be held, with burial at Pilgrim Home Cemetery.

A memorial service to celebrate Ethel’s life will be organized at a later date, providing an opportunity for friends and extended family to come together in remembrance. For those wishing to express their sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to Resthaven Care Center or Hospice of Holland—a tribute that aligns with Ethel’s compassion and care for others.
