Susan Dunn Lawson, a compassionate and creative soul, departed from this world on December 2, 2023, in Surfside Beach, SC, at the age of 69. She is survived by her cherished children, Graham Odom, John (Mariel) Lawson, Kellen (Jess) Lawson, and Caroline (Josh) Gerraghty, as well as her sister, Dorothy Magner, and beloved grandchildren, Cole, Gage, Esme, and Adelaide. Susan was predeceased by her husband, John Michael “Mike” Lawson.
Born on November 28, 1954, to Robert Dunn and Dorothy Huggins Dunn of Marietta, GA, Susan’s life was marked by a commitment to advocacy and a passion for the arts. A 1976 graduate of Wesleyan College with a degree in philosophy, she dedicated her career to helping those in need. From instructing underprivileged children to caring for individuals with severe disabilities and providing home care to those with physical disabilities, Susan’s heart remained devoted to making a difference in people’s lives.
Her love for the arts was evident throughout her life. From playing handbells, singing, and playing classical guitar in her youth to becoming an avid concert-goer and pursuing her passion for painting and drawing as an adult, Susan’s creativity knew no bounds.
A mother first and foremost, Susan’s warmth, intelligence, sense of humor, and tireless compassion touched the lives of many. Her home was a haven for all, not just her four children but their friends and significant others as well. Fondly referred to as “Mom” by many beyond her immediate family, Susan created a safe and supportive environment for everyone.
In lieu of flowers, Susan’s family requests honoring her memory with donations to the Palmetto Literacy Council.
This organization provides free literacy and math tutoring for children and individuals with disabilities, a cause close to Susan’s heart. In remembering Susan, may her legacy of compassion and creativity continue to inspire those whose lives she touched.
