With the unexpected passing of Mason Murray, more often known as Coach Mason, the Penn Hills community is grieving the loss of a cherished individual during this Christmas season. There will never be another Mason like him; he had an enormous influence on the neighborhood, and his passing has been devastating to everyone who knew him. Before his tenure as a respected coach and member of the PHMFA board.
Mason left an unforgettable impression on the Penn Hills High School football scene as the school’s record-holding running back. His persona was defined, however, by his altruistic commitment to devote his life to developing young athletes. Over more than 20 years, Mason devoted himself completely to coaching and board work for the PHMFA, making a positive impact on the lives of innumerable young athletes via his example, advice, and encouragement.
His unwavering commitment to the sport and his passion for the young athletes he trained shone through at every practice, game, and community event. Mason was loved and admired by many in the Pittsburgh city and the football world at large, thus his influence extended well beyond Penn Hills. His impact as a guide, trainer, and companion is felt by all who were fortunate enough to know him. The citywide expressions of sorrow and homage demonstrate the deep influence he had on people’s lives.
In this time of sorrow, we extend our deepest sympathies to Coach Mason’s loved ones, particularly his cousin Sharon Murray, and to everyone who knew and loved him. Even though this is supposed to be a joyful and celebratory moment, the news of his death has placed a pall of grief.
The pain of this loss is magnified when one learns of it through social media before hearing it from loved ones. Our community must unite in grief and celebration of Coach Mason’s life as we go through this challenging period.
In the good impact he made on all of us, let us take comfort in remembering him fondly. We extend our deepest sympathies to the Murray family and everyone else mourning the loss of this extraordinary guy.
As we continue Mason Murray’s legacy—a real pillar of our community—let us draw strength and support from one another. You will be missed, Coach Mason. Your memory will endure in our hearts and minds for all time.
