n 2023, at the age of 69, Richard P. Batchelor left this world at St. Luke Health Services in Oswego. He had lived his entire life in the town. Richard Batchelor was a proud alumnus of Oswego High School; he was born to Flora (Leanor) and Richard Batchelor, who passed away in the town. Before Richard retired from the Site Independence Station, he devoted nearly 20 years of his working life to Miller’s till it closed.
His dedication and perseverance had an indelible effect on his coworkers and the people he helped. Richard’s dedication to serving his community was on full display during his many years as a firefighter with the Oswego Town Volunteer Fire Department. He was dependable and committed to his community, always willing to offer a hand to those in need, and he was a staunch supporter of many causes. Richard loved being outside, which he did in addition to his commitment to public service.
He loved camping because of the peacefulness and companionship he experienced there. Also, in his spare time, he would restore old cars to their original condition, which he loved. When Richard wasn’t out enjoying himself, he was probably cheering on his favorite horses at a local race in Oswego County. The Burnham family of Oswego includes Richard’s daughter Morgan, his son Philip (Amanda) Batchelor, and Kathleen Gillette, his beloved wife of 46 years.
The four sisters he had—Bonnie (Jack) Kingsley of Ohio, Lana Myers of St. Louis, Cheryl (Doug) Tosh of Baldwinsville, and Ruth (Bob) Thompson of Arkansas—will always remember him fondly. Richard’s six grandkids will carry on his legacy.
His aunt Margaret Stoddard passed away before him, leaving a hole that everyone who knew him would miss. There will be no visiting hours and the funeral will take place quietly at a time that is convenient for the family.
Donations in favor of the Oswego Town Volunteer Fire Department, 640 County Route 20, #1, Oswego, NY 13126, would be greatly appreciated by the family in place of floral offerings. Condolences may be offered at www.dowdlefh.com, and the arrangements are being handled by the Dowdle Funeral Home.
Among Richard P. Batchelor’s many admirable traits are his steadfast devotion to his neighborhood, his deep affection for his loved ones, and his capacity to take delight in life’s little joys. His soul shall be at peace.
