Mary Jane Click, a resilient and loving soul, peacefully departed this world on Sunday, December 10, 2023, at the age of 80, in Fort Gratiot, Michigan. Born on March 30, 1943, in Yale, Michigan, Mary was the daughter of the late George J. and Mary Lucille (Brennan) Eschker.
Mary’s life was a testament to strength, love, and resilience. She triumphed over breast cancer twice and survived three strokes, embodying a spirit that faced challenges head-on. Her love for family was evident in her cherished moments with her children and grandchildren. Mary found joy in simple pleasures, whether it was sharing lunch with friends or riding her beloved Gold Wing motorcycle.
A faithful parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Emmett, Mary contributed to her community throughout her life. She worked at John Farrel Elementary School, Port Huron Factories- I.A.C (formerly Lear), United Tec of Port Huron, the Bridge Restaurant, and Port Huron Northern High School.
In her leisure time, Mary reveled in attending MSU bowl games, creating lasting memories on vacations with her kids and grandkids, and exploring treasures at garage sales and flea markets. Her grandchildren affectionately knew her as Gma and Grandma.
Mary is survived by her daughters, Barbara Watteny, Christine Pearson, Jacklyn (Jon) Fredendall, and Terry (Mike) Sanders; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sisters, brothers, brothers-in-law, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Her passing was preceded by her parents, Lucille and George Eschker, sisters, brothers-in-law, and a son-in-law.
A memorial service to celebrate Mary’s life will be held at a later date. Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Kaatz Funeral Directors, Yale. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to be made to the Medilodge of Port Huron Memory Unit or the St. Clair County Humane Society—a fitting tribute to Mary’s compassion for others, including furry friends.
Mary’s life journey is eloquently summarized in her own words: “Life’s journey is not to arrive safely at the grave in a well-prepared body but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting holy shit…. What a ride!” Her legacy will undoubtedly be a cherished memory, and those who had the privilege of knowing Mary will forever be touched by the warmth of her spirit.
