We are saddened to inform you that our dear brother, Ret. Captain Mike Smith, passed away peacefully last night at his home in Cortland. It is with heavy hearts that we share this news with you. The knowledge that his years of suffering have finally come to an end brings us some measure of comfort, despite the fact that the agony of his leaving is great.

Retired Captain Mike Smith displayed unflinching bravery in the face of life, both in the military and in the struggles he experienced in his personal life. His ability to persevere and his dogged drive served as an example to everyone who knew him.

The people who were lucky enough to be a part of his path were able to appreciate and admire him because of the grace with which he carried himself through the challenges and difficulties he faced.
