In the world of music, a great light has gone out, leaving behind a void that can never be filled. Marlena Kleinman Malas, a phenomenal voice teacher, has passed away, leaving behind a legacy that resonates through the hearts of those she touched. Her impact extended far beyond the realms of vocal instruction; she was a mentor, a guide, and a compassionate soul who brought out the best in her students. Our relationship was unique, filled with moments of disagreement and head-butting,
but through it all, Marlena had an uncanny ability to extract the finest qualities from me. Her endearing nickname for me, “pussy cat,” echoed in the halls of our lessons, a testament to her warmth and affection. Even on days when tardiness crept in, a bouquet of flowers accompanied my arrival, a small token of appreciation for her unwavering commitment. Marlena’s expertise in opera was unparalleled; she possessed an intimate knowledge of the art form that she imparted with passion and precision.
Our bond went beyond the ordinary, a connection that transcended the understanding of many. Today, I extend my deepest condolences to her family and colleagues at esteemed institutions like the Manhattan School of Music, Julliard, Curtis Institute, Chautauqua, and countless others. Marlena Kleinman Malas lived a life of service, impacting thousands of singers with the highest level of integrity.
As we bid farewell to this extraordinary soul, may God bless her memory always. Rest in sweet peace, dear Marlena, your voice will echo in our hearts eternally.
