Terry Blankenship Obituary, Learn More About Terry Lee “Windshield” Blankenship’s Death

Hurley, Virginia, mourns the loss of a local legend as Terry Lee “Windshield” Blankenship, 64, passed away in the early hours of November 23, 2023, following a prolonged hospital stay. Born on August 9, 1959, Terry was the fifth child of Edna and Leonard Blankenship. A dedicated member of the Buchanan County community, Terry’s life was a testament to hard work, loyalty, and the simple joys of rural living.

Terry’s journey began at Hurley High School, where he graduated in 1977. His pursuit of education led him to the Nashville Auto Diesel College, though his time there was cut short, amusingly described as a “half-day” adventure before returning home to his beloved Buchanan County.

A proud member of the graduating class, Terry’s roots in his community ran deep. For the next 16 years, Terry dedicated himself to the coal mining industry, showcasing his skills as he operated a continuous miner with precision and care. His commitment to his work was evident in his determination to ensure the machinery remained intact, emphasizing, “coal could be ran.” Terry’s work ethic and dedication made him a respected figure among his peers, leaving an indelible mark on the local mining community.

In 1980, Terry took another significant step in his life, marrying Athelene McCoy. The couple welcomed their only child, Travis, into the world in 1987. Family became a central focus for Terry, and his retirement from mining in 1994 allowed him to dedicate more time to his loved ones. Post-retirement, Terry immersed himself in his passion for repairing cars and taking on odd jobs, showcasing his mechanical prowess.

A man of simple pleasures, he found joy in watching westerns and NASCAR, finding solace in the tranquility of his surroundings. Terry’s love for horses also shone through, as he could often be found attending local horse shows, enjoying the freedom of riding.

Terry’s sociable nature and storytelling skills made him a loyal friend, known for his kindness and caring demeanor. His anecdotes could turn a brief grocery run into a two-hour expedition, leaving friends and acquaintances entertained and appreciative of his company.

As the community comes together to mourn the loss of Terry Lee “Windshield” Blankenship, they remember a man who lived life authentically, valuing hard work, family, and the simple pleasures that make life meaningful. Terry’s legacy will endure through the memories he created and the impact he had on those fortunate enough to share in his journey through the hills of Buchanan County.
