Sidney O’Neal Obituary, A Precious Soul Gone Too Soon

Greenville mourns the passing of Sidney “Sid” Redman O’Neal, a beloved member of the community who departed on June 25, 2019, at the age of 80. Sid’s life was one marked by selfless service, family devotion, and a proud military legacy.

Born on January 6, 1939, in Pitt County to Thomas Jefferson O’Neal and Dora Gregory O’Neal, Sid grew up with a sense of duty and commitment. He courageously served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict, exemplifying patriotism and honor.

Sid is survived by his daughters, Sharon Mayo and Liz Suggs, both of whom were a source of immense pride and joy for him. Sharon’s family includes her children James Mayo and his wife Kristin, with their children Bristol and Kinley, and Zachary Mayo. Liz, along with her husband Danny Suggs, is survived by their children Tyler Norville and Christian Suggs.

A graveside service will be held on Friday at 3 PM at Pinewood Memorial Park, where Sid will find his final resting place. The service will be officiated by Rev. Gordon Braxton, offering solace and remembrance for family and friends.

In addition to his parents, Sid was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Doris Everett O’Neal, and his brothers, Thomas O’Neal and William O’Neal. The void left by his departure is deeply felt by all who knew and loved him.

The family will receive friends at Smith Funeral Service & Crematory on Thursday from 5 to 7 PM, providing an opportunity for the community to offer condolences and share memories.

To honor Sid’s memory, friends and well-wishers may send flowers or a memorial gift to the family via the Sympathy Store. Additionally, a beautiful memorial tree can be planted in his memory.
